Support for Samsung Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra, Google Pixel Watch 3, and future watches that ship with Wear OS 5.X.

Due to a policy change by Google, new Wear OS 5 watches, including the Samsung Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra, are not compatible with Squeaky Dog Studios watch faces today.

Why can't we support the new smartwatches shipping with Wear OS 5?

Watch faces developed by Squeaky Dog Studios are smart watch faces and contain lots of business logic to make them work. For example, PhotoWear is an interactive watch face that can be allows custom user configurations made possible by the mobile companion app. The user can also interact directly with the watch face to switch between photos and layouts.

The policy change by Google requires that watch faces for these new smartwatches are developed using a declarative XML format called Watch Face Format. We are not able to convert our watch faces to deploy in this new format. Its capabilities are more limited than ours, and converting our faces to that format will result in a significant loss of functionality.

What does this mean for existing users?

If you are using a smartwatch running Wear OS 4 or earlier, nothing changes and you will still be able to install and use Squeaky Dog Studios watch faces. This remains true even if your smartwatch is updated to Wear OS 5.

If you decide to purchase the Galaxy Watch7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, or Google Pixel Watch 3, you will unfortunately no longer be able to install or use Squeaky Dog Studios watch faces on your new smartwatch.

What does this mean for the future?

Squeaky Dog Studios has been developing watch face apps for Wear OS and previously Android Wear and Samsung Tizen-based smartwatches. We will continue supporting our existing users and will monitor any policy changes by Google that will allow us to support new smartwatches shipping with Wear OS 5 in the future.
